Turn it inside out before it goes in the wash. That single flip protects glitter, sequins, and rhinestone lettering better than any fancy detergent, and it takes about two seconds. This one is for anyone with a "BDAY GIRL" sweatshirt or a tutu that needs to survive more than one photo op.
The sparkle on kids' clothes lives on the outside. Sequins, glitter vinyl, foil lettering, the little rhinestones that make a birthday shirt feel like an event... all of it sits on the surface of the fabric. When you toss an outfit in the wash right side out, that surface takes the beating. It rubs against zippers, snaps, jeans, and every other thing swirling around in there. That rubbing is what dulls glitter and starts lifting the corners of pressed-on letters.
Flip it inside out and you change what the machine grabs. Now the plain fabric side takes the friction, and the sparkly side rides along protected. Same wash, same water, way less wear on the part that matters. It's the cheapest trick in the whole laundry room and honestly the one that makes the biggest difference over time.
Inside out is the headline, but a couple of small choices around it stretch the life of a piece even further.
Wash in cold water. Heat is what loosens glue on vinyl lettering and can shrink or warp tulle. Cold keeps everything relaxed and holding its shape. It's also gentler on colors, so that hot pink stays hot pink.
Use the gentle or delicate cycle when you have it. Less spinning and slower agitation means less tugging on sequins and seams. If your machine has a hand-wash setting, that works great here too.
Skip the fabric softener on sparkly pieces. It sounds counterintuitive, but softener leaves a coating that can dull glitter and make sequins look filmy. A regular mild detergent, and not too much of it, is all you need.
Zip up any zippers and snap any snaps before the wash, whether it's on the sparkly outfit or something else in the load. Open zippers are the number one snagger of delicate fabric. This one habit saves more tutus than people realize.
For the true showstoppers, the smash cake outfit you want to keep in a memory box, the tutu that's headed to a sibling one day, hand washing is worth the ten minutes. Fill a sink or basin with cool water and a little mild detergent, turn the piece inside out, and swish it around gently. No wringing, no scrubbing. Let it soak a few minutes, rinse in clean cool water, and press the water out instead of twisting.
This is also your best move for spot cleaning. Cake frosting, grass stains, a mystery smear from the party... you can usually treat just that spot by hand and skip washing the whole thing. The less an outfit goes through a full wash cycle, the longer the sparkle lasts. So if only one sleeve got into the cupcakes, deal with the sleeve.
The dryer is harder on sparkly clothes than the wash ever is. Heat plus tumbling is exactly the combination that curls up vinyl letters, melts the edges of sequins, and turns fluffy tulle into a sad flat pancake. Air drying is the answer nearly every time.
Lay flat or hang to dry, still inside out. For tutus, hang them upside down by the waistband so the tulle can fluff back out as it dries instead of drying creased. For sweatshirts and tees with lettering, laying them flat keeps the design from stretching while it's damp and heavy. Somewhere with air moving, not in direct blazing sun for hours, which can fade bright colors over time.
If you're in a genuine hurry and have to use the dryer, use the lowest heat or an air-only tumble setting, keep the piece inside out, and pull it while it's still slightly damp to finish air drying. But truly, air drying is the habit that keeps a favorite outfit photo ready for the next kid in the family.
Never put a hot iron directly on sequins, glitter, or pressed lettering. If a piece needs the wrinkles knocked out, turn it inside out and iron the plain fabric side on low, or use a pressing cloth between the iron and the design. Steam from a distance works too and skips the contact risk entirely.
When it's time to put a special outfit away, fold it with the sparkly side facing in so nothing rubs against it in the drawer. For tutus, store them flat or hung rather than crammed into a bin where the tulle gets crushed. A little breathing room goes a long way toward keeping shape.
